For best results I recommend Windsor & Newton |
Beginners: If you are just starting out and cost is a concern you may substitute to student grade pigments if necessary, such as Academy by Grumbacher or Cotman by Winsor & Newton, use tubes not pans. The student grade will be less expensive but will have more filler and less color. You can buy student sets which can contain up to 12 tubes of pigment along with inexpensive brushes, Cotman Student set I have also just discovered daVinci colors these are huge jumbo tubes and reasonably priced.
Paper - I recommend to only use Arches full 22x30 sheets.
The blocks react differently (but if you have them use them) Try not to
use a student grade such as Strathmore Canson. It will say cold press and
the right weight but or you will become frustrated, it does not react
the same.
(Point Reyes or Mendocino workshops paper available for purchase)

Arches Watercolor paper
Substitutions
I like a Cosmotop Mix B No. 30 but a good mop or hake brush should
work just fine.
I recommend Arches paper otherwise the results will not be the same.
Personally I prefer 300 lb cold press but to keep costs down
140 lb is suggested.
